Son of an electronics business family in Silvassa, upgrades himself through the fellowship and works as an executive assistant with a leading electronic system manufacturer in Pune

Hailing from a family with a well-established  mobile and electronics business,  Shivam Mistry was exposed to and fascinated by business from a young age.

In 2020, Shiv was in his final year of BBA and had decided to take a gap year after college to prepare for CAT. Shiv was enthusiastic to learn and do new things but was unable to put that into action. 

Shiv felt that being in a small town was restricting his exposure and growth. He was eager to learn new things and meet like minded people. Following informative pages and watching youtube videos didn’t fully satisfy his hunger beyond a point.

One day, he came across a video on Instagram by Nisha Chawla, a co-founder of the Enterprise India Fellowship about choosing between “joining the family business or doing an MBA”.  He could relate with every sentence and immediately checked out the entire page.He religiously kept up with the account for over a year and a half and tried to learn as much as he could.

In March 2020, when the nationwide lockdown was imposed, Shiv had hoped to take some time and rest at home. However, within the first seven days of the lockdown, Shiv ended up joining the Enterprise India Fellowship as a Partner (students who are a part of the Fellowship are called Partners), and kicked off a year more productive than he could ever imagine. 

The situation in the country was very dire, and due to the sudden travel ban, many daily wage laborers from different states were stranded in their cities of work without access to basic resources like food. Many citizen groups and organizations jumped in to help in different ways and one such initiative was the Daal Chawal Initiative in Pune, led by the Pune Police and citizen activists like Sathya Natrajan.

To contribute to this, as their first project, Shiv and his fellow Partners, with guidance from mentors like Nisha Chawla, worked to help raise funds for the Initiative by helping organize a three day career growth hacks workshop, the #start weekender. The workshop was hosted by nine enterprising young people from different fields to help participants dedicate a weekend to reflect on their lives using 10 different tools and techniques to identify their strengths, inner conflicts and explore next steps. In return for participation in the workshop, participants were encouraged to donate to the Daal Chawal initiative. In two weeks, Shiv and the fellow Partners got 50 people to participate in #start and one lakh rupees were raised to support the initiative. 

Through this project, Shiv learned how to fundraise, create leads and close sales as well as create a unique user experience for the participants. Shiv contributed to the project with action-orientedness, discipline and punctuality. Ankita Parashar, Business Partner and Marketing Lead at Enterprise recalls, “When we interviewed Shiv for the Fellowship, he had a white board in his background and he carefully wrote notes from our conversation. We knew then, this guy won’t have to be hand held for anything, rather he will be leading!” And through this project, his peers and mentors were amazed to see his time management and “doer-ship” in action.

From experiencing day to day operations of his family business, he had learned that it was quite different from the theories learned in college which made him realise that applied knowledge is power. 

Before joining the fellowship Shiv had shared, “The primary reason I want to join the Enterprise India Fellowship is to gain practical knowledge by working on projects which will also help me build my career, skills, relationships, and self growth.
And through the fellowship, that’s what he ended up doing.

Throughout his fellowship journey, he worked on over five projects including in-house projects like #karo & #start and a client project called Chandrayaan0.0 with the Area Sabha Association of Pune. 

Shiv considers #karo as the most meaningful part of his fellowship journey. Shiv says, “I won’t be able to explain how much it has impacted me. That word #karo is going to be stuck in my head, heart and life forever.”

In September 2020, all the Partners came together to co-create #karo 3.0 – a seven weekend-long online festival to celebrate the “art of doing”. The idea was to help people understand that just watching, learning, and hearing something is not enough. We need to DO it, #karo it!

Shiv worked in the sales and outreach team and also hosted one of the workshops . Public speaking did not come naturally for him, so he was stepping out of his comfort zone and asked for help when he needed it. On the day of the workshop, he  gracefully hosted the 150 participants, and courageously stepped out of his comfort zone.

Following that, Shiv, along with Enterprise Partners Apeksha Rathod and Jagruti Jethwani, took up every opportunity to learn and do, stuck with the project through a couple iterations and became a part of the #karo leadership team. Recently they co-led a team of 7 new Enterprise Partners to organize #karo workshops, and helped them kickstart their respective fellowship journeys by activating the “doing” mindset.

Through different workshops, working on different projects and support from mentors, Shiv has felt himself transform from a shy but passionate person to a passionate person who radiates confidence and creates opportunities for himself.

Before joining the fellowship, Shiv mentioned he’d like to work with leaders of successful businesses from whom he could learn and develop himself. 

At one of the weekly Enterprise sessions, everyone made a list of individuals they would like to work with. There were around 10 names in Shiv’s list, one of which was Rupesh Gupta, Managing Director at Klug Avalon Mechatronics Pvt Ltd., the first Indian company to indigenously develop safety systems for cranes.

After 2 Two weeks after of that session, he contacted Mr Gupta, introduced himself and his intention to work and learn from him. Mr Gupta invited him over for a conversation to Pune, and Shiv ended up joining Klug Avalon.  and The opportunity also prompted him to leave home, a long-time goal of his, and move from Silvassa to Pune.

Today, Shivam plays an important role in the company. In a short span of a few months, he is leading teams and working with multiple aspects of the company and automating their processes. 

Mr. Gupta shares, “As a mature organization, we were finding it difficult to incorporate today’s technological tools in our business. Under our internship programme, we hired Shiv, a student at the Enterprise India Fellowship. Shiv has been working for the last 6 months and has already successfully implemented CRM for the sales department. He is currently working on integrating cloud telephony with CRM and automating the communication through email and Whatsapp. He is hand-holding our sales team to help them get more productive using CRM. Shiv is focused, hard-working and doesn’t shy in taking the plunge to learn anything new. The organisation has greatly benefited from Shiv. With his approach and attitude, he is onto building a great success story.”

Although the industry is very different from Shivam’s family business, he enjoys the challenge of learning something new every day. Today he is directly working with and receiving mentorship from Rupesh Gupta, who not only guides Shiv in relation to this job, but also about his future career and growth.

Shiv has beautifully practiced setting intentions, working towards them with utmost discipline, grit and punctuality, going beyond his comfort zones, connecting with people and creating the type of opportunities and growth he wanted.

As Shiv graduates from the fellowship and becomes an Enterprise Fellow, our Projects Coordinator and Content Coach at the Enterprise India Fellowship, Lubaina Cementwala feels “Shiv has grown by leaps and bounds – he was seeking to transform himself and has succeeded in doing so. For example- He began the fellowship as someone who thought he could never write but he overcame that mental block and ended up writing two blogs!”
