MY JOURNEY TOWARDS CONSISTENCY

[dropcaps type=’square’ font_size=’80’ color=’#4a4a4a’ background_color=’#ffffff’ border_color=”]H[/dropcaps]i, I am Rohan and this is my story. Some people get motivated by motivational speakers, by watching their videos and attending their seminars, but people usually end up using the mental energy in a couple of days, that they have gained while watching motivational videos. This is a common complaint so this kind of person should watch the video after every time they get out of energy. And this is what I call consistency & patience.

The core driving force in my journey towards developing consistency & patience was being a part of The Enterprise Fellowship. The Enterprise Fellowship is a program where you are trained as a problem solver & risk-taker by dealing with the real world. Enterprise is for the people who want to be doers and are ready to take risks for their growth. During this program, I have participated in so many activities, sessions, workshops which have helped me in my journey.

Because of the corona crisis, everything has to move online. The Enterprise team introduced us to different tools and techniques that could help us attend sessions and continue our projects virtually. One of them was Scrum Sheet. It is a sheet which records our milestones and use of time. For example, you want to do some work tomorrow and then you add this in the milestone section, including time. Then there is also a section where you put the work which is done from your milestone section. And this is the way you record your work. It is very useful when it is used in group projects. Attending weekly session at Enterprise and practising the scrum methodology has helped me in monitoring my work and increased my consistency.

Being involved in a project boosted my consistency journey. I started working on a very exciting project called Fever of Treasure, which is a late-night treasure hunt event. Being engaged in this project has helped apply what I have learned through different sessions. For example, we had some sessions that revolved around user research, and as we started this project we needed to do to define our persona as our target audience and then we did research interviews with potential users. Working on this event positively affected my mindset to work continuously and be patient as we work long and hard to get results.

“THE DAY ONE”

One Monday evening, I was at the Enterprise Space for my session and got introduced to an app, called Day One. And here was the push from Enterprise that I was searching for, to make myself consistent. You must be curious, in this fast-moving world with tons of apps available at your fingertip, what is that special factor that this app has?

Everyone has a habit of talking to friends, colleagues or family members about what we have done for the day. And this habit of sharing is used by the app. So whatever work I did in the day, I started recording it on this app. Gradually I started being consistent with this habit of recording my body of work. The reflection that I was writing earlier in my notebook, I started writing in this app and the plus point for this shift is that I can easily access it because it’s on my phone and my phone is always with me.

As for filling my entries in the app, it was hard for me in the beginning, I used to open it rarely. I was struggling to make the inputs daily. So I started to make alternate days. Slowly I made it and now I am doing it daily, which is a win for me. I did not just become consistent with the app but this energy of consistency also positively affected some habits that I wanted to grow, such as reading more books, completing TV shows that I started. Recording my body of work through the Day One app has been the golden ticket for me.

Earlier, I was not able to complete a single book that I started. It was not easy for me to complete a book, as I was not a person who reads. But I wanted to grow a hobby for this. I used to buy books and also started to read them, but I usually end up reading only 10 to 15 pages of them. It was not that they were boring, but I was not motivated towards reading. But I built my consistency toward it, and it was the effect of the habit of filling entries in the day one app. And then I completed my first book in 14 days, which was written by one of my inspiration, Ms. Sudha Murthy. Completing this book made me feel like I accomplished my first milestone towards my journey of consistency.

I have learnt a lot of things in this journey but one thing that’s going to remain in me forever which is the determination of achieving something which made me consistent and less of a procrastinator.

The Enterprise Fellowship was a kick-start for me towards consistency. I will make sure to adopt new things and set milestones to continue with this habit. One thing that’s very important in your journey, that it’s you who can help yourself, someone can guide you to the path but it’s you who has to walk through it and reach your destination.
