The only undergrad b-school in India that gets you in action for the real world

Picture abhi baaki hai merey dost….

Vo kehte hain na ki…agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaaho to puri kayanat usey tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jaati hai. This is something which has happened to me. Hi, my name is Tarun. I come from a small city – Jodhpur, Rajasthan. I will tell you the phase of my life where it all started to take shape.  My story began when I took a gap year after my 12th class, in 2018 (after 12 years of school and going with the flow). I thought of taking a break, exploring and finding what interests me.

What prompted it? It was prompted by a range of factors, including my lack of confidence, social interaction in my current environment, and my lack of direction in terms of my future goals. It wasn’t until I encountered the challenge of choosing a path for myself.

To help me figure out what I wanted to do, I visited a career consultant in Bangalore and took a series of exams. However, after three hours of testing, one side consultant told me that I couldn’t be an engineer and should do BCA, other side my father dreamed of me becoming an engineer and believes that I could do anything I set my mind to.

I didn’t want to choose my path based on a report and instead wanted to explore other options, but I was also afraid of being left behind and not being able to secure a good future. After returning to Jodhpur, I continued my quest for clarity about my motivations and goals by talking to various people and visiting different places. I was looking for a place where I could learn coding hands-on and work on improving my personality. I wanted to get ahead of my peers and not struggle in college. During this process, I met Vivek, a man who had left his job and had over 5 years of experience as a Business Developer in IT companies.

Vivek introduced me to the concept of distance learning and working as a Business Developer at an IT startup, and I eventually decided to pursue this path. However, not everyone supported my decision, and I faced criticism and social pressure, leading me to even lie to my relatives as they said “tu business toh nhi kar payega” ya “tu apna saal kharab kar rha hai” and I told them that I was studying engineering. This added additional stress to an already challenging situation.

During the 1.5 years, I did everything that my mentor told me, from creating proposals and graphics to managing projects, attending sales meetings and facing my fears. There were some days when I made excuses and didn’t do much, also after that experience, I realized that I could have gained a lot more if I had pushed myself out of my comfort zone and didn’t get much bothered by social pressure. And also after that I have part ways with him for some reasons. And my search begins again.

And It’s certainly exciting to think about all the different options that could be explored in a story. But where to begin?

I started my search to find a place which fulfils all the needs that I realised during my 1.5 years of experience. I believed, I researched and I came across 4 platforms that somewhere resonated with me. I picked up the phone and talked with everyone. While talking I realised I need something which is personalised for me and genuine. My options were drop-down to 2 platforms. One was Avalon meta which provides a virtual campus to gain multiple skills and the other was Enterprise India Fellowship which is a part-time program to work with different domains and industry experts and get personalized attention where I lack.

As I began my Enterprise India Fellowship journey, I seized every opportunity that came my way. One such opportunity was a project that required 10 credits to get into that project, and I only had 2-3 credits. But I was determined to be a part of it, so I confidently approached my mentor Aditya at Enterprise and asked to be included. I put all my energy into making the project a success and was recognized by my peers and mentors for the work I did. This experience helped me push beyond my comfort zone, as I demonstrated confidence in myself and committed to the task at hand.

Another moment that helped me realize the importance of just taking action was when I participated in the conflexion process at Enterprise. This involved reflecting on the previous month and writing a blog with the help of 7 days of hands-on workshops. Initially, I was scared to write because I didn’t believe in my own abilities. In my first attempt, I even left the process halfway through. But on my second try, I received a call from Akash, a team member at Enterprise and someone I consider a big brother. His encouragement literally pushed me to write the blog in just one hour, even though I was crying while doing it. After that incident, I wrote 6-7 more blogs and realized that I was actually skilled at reflecting and expressing my emotions.

Throughout my various projects, I found myself building new skills and breaking out of my comfort zone. In one project, I even discovered a leadership spark within myself. It wasn’t always easy to overcome self-doubt and take on projects, but I learned to use my skills to my advantage and make them work. I was also recognized as a visual person and received praise from those around me for my talents in this area.

I have two strengths: a desire to learn sales and visual skills. These qualities helped me become a team member at Enterprise India Fellowship as a Sales Catalyst. Previously, I thought that I needed to constantly work on my communication and focus solely on this area. However, after completing several projects and participating in an event where I used my visual skills to clearly convey brand messaging through visual aids, I realized that I could leverage this skill to achieve my goals. This marked a shift in my thinking and motivated me to use my visual skills to build towards my desired outcomes.

I also got self-aware of my inner challenges also. I started to compare myself to my peers and degrade myself. This becomes a big hurdle moving ahead. Even though my strengths are different from theirs. This is a constraint I felt in myself and want to work on this year 2023.

Every writer works in a different way. Some writers work straight through from beginning to end. Others work in pieces they arrange later, while others work from sentence to sentence. But when we are telling our story it comes with a desire that we have and the action we took in past.

My life comes to circle back. Got an opportunity to work with the 65-year-old Trading family business. Changing the traditional process to Modern solutions. Why circle back? Going to work with my mentor Vivek again. He was the one who called me and gave me this opportunity. There is a feeling of uncertainty, the feeling of how this going to turn around and the feeling of keep on contributing to Enterprise in some way or another.

I took the decision as fear has left the chat because of the support that I have gotten from Enterprise India Fellowship. Always grateful to be part of something which is serving a higher purpose for people like me to unlock their potential.
